Dockworkers in Rangoon. At eight minutes past eight, on the eighth day of the eighth month 1988, the people of Burma walked out of their places of work to demand an end to military rule and a restoration of a democratic system. Spearheaded by the students, this mass movement of civil disobedience ended in bloodshed as the army gunned down untold thousands of unarmed demonstrators. The dockworkers were the first wave of strikers.
