20 year old Florence Nizigiyimana lives in the Ruyigi Province with her mother, sister and brother. Their father left them five years ago. As a baby Florence was a normal child. Her mother says that at two months old Florence's legs and spinal column began to deform. Until recently she would just sit at the front of the house. A field worker with a community based rehabilitation program of Handicap International taught the family how they could take better care of Florence. They gave her better clothes, improved her personal hygiene and taught her some simple exercises. Now she has begun to walk with a stick. Although Florence has a wheelchair, she has never been to school. She will receive a tricycle soon, which will allow her to attend an educational centre for adults.
