12 year old Jose Lucas Benabides displays his exercise book at San Cristobal school, in a classroom which he shares with his younger siblings. He attends school only sporadically on account of working in the silver mines to subsidise his mother's earnings and consequently struggles to keep up with his younger classmates. His late father was a miner who died 5 years ago of silicosis, a respiratory disease caused by the inhalation of silica dust. Cristobal school is part of a CARE International project to educate children in the region and offer them the opportunity not to work in the mines...Photo: Dermot Tatlow/Panos Pictures/Felix Features
