When Francis Pii Kugbila became mentally unwell in 2009, his brothers took him to a traditional healer who forced his leg through a hole in a heavy length of tree trunk and pinned it in place, fashioning a crude restraint. Kugbila spent two years restrained in this manner, naked in this bare concrete room near Bolgatanga in the Upper East region of Ghana, where he ate, slept and relieved himself. In late 2010 he came to the attention of mental health advocacy NGO, BasicNeeds, who arranged for him to receive appropriate treatment and negotiated for his release. Now fully recovered, pictured here on 28 January 2013, Kugbila has been able to rebuild his family life and return to his profession as a teacher. He is holding photographs depicting him in the condition in which he was found by BasicNeeds.
