Principal Qiao Xiangdong credits the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games for spurring the local government to build a USD 42 million new campus for the academy's 600 students. "Before, some parents were worried about sending their kids to sports schools because they thought their children would have to eat too much bitterness," Qiao says, using the Chinese term for enduring hardship. "But the Olympic Games have made people willing to contribute to the nation's glory."
