Russian mining community of Barentsburg. The fate of the Russian settlement on Norwegian territory is uncertain as mining isn't profitable anymore. However Russia is reluctant to give up its' last foothold on the island. The Soviet era settlement has become a regular stop for tourist to the island. The Arctic island of Spitsbergen is the largest of islands in the group that makes up Svalbard. The islands are close to the North Pole and about 60% of the land mass is covered by glaciers. The main activities are mining, tourism and Arctic research. © Fredrik Naumann
