Prayer for Peace. The faithful pray for divine intervention in order to stop the bloodshed in the Liberian capital. They are among forty thousand refugees who have fled the fighting and are now living in the Samuel K Doe sports stadium. The ongoing conflict in Libera intensified in March 2003 when rebels opposed to the government of Charles Taylor gained territory across much of the country, advancing on the capital city Monrovia. In August 2003 Taylor agreed to hand over power to an interim government and went into exile, which led to the signing of a peace agreement. Charles Taylor was indicted for war crimes by a UN court, and is accused of fuelling conflict across West Africa.
