The Afghan government has started an eradication campaign that aims to deter farmers from growing poppies. However, since growing poppies is often the only means of an income for many farmers, and alternatives are scarce, farmers still take their chances on a massive scale. In spite of the efforts of the government, Afghan opium production remains the highest in the world.
