A new student being coached at weight-lifting at the Weifang City Sports School, one of 3,000 state-run athletic academies that consign nearly 400,000 youngsters to a form of athletic servitude. In the category of weight-lifting, many of these students come from farming communities. They have been hand picked by sports scouts who travel to far away provinces visiting schools whilst taking detailed measurements of potential atheletes. There is more of a focus on finding girls as research by the Chinese state suggests that it is easier to win Olympic gold medals in this area. They measure shoulder width, thigh length and waist circumference - and if everything fits, these young students are told they have the honour of serving their motherland.
