An 'organoponico', urban garden, in the centre of Matanzas. This area used to surround the train tracks, but after the trains stopped running, the area became abandoned and covered with litter, creating hazardous conditions for the neighbourhood. In 1989, when Cuba plunged into economic crisis, this and other areas in the country were cleared and the local population started to grow vegetables. It guaranteed their direct supply of fresh food and it improved the urban environment..
