Construction work in the Bhendi Bazaar. Most of the property in the Bhendi Bazaar are decrepit colonial-era buildings that, while being intrinsic to the area's vibrancy, have not been maintained or modernised. The Saifee Burhani Upliftment Trust is in the process of buying up the area's buildings which are to be demolished and replaced with India's largest urban development. The former residents will be rehoused in bigger spaces within the new development. Although not without its critics, the project has been helped by the unity of the community, the area is populated mostly by a Shia sect, the Dawoodi Bohra, and the perceived benefits they will gain from the development.
