Families from La Trinidad are settled in Escuintla city's gym after being evacuated from their community. Originally from Huehuetenango, hundreds of families fled to Mexico in 1982 escaping state-repression during the war. In 1998, after the peace accords, the families were given land at the foot of the Fuego Volcano as part of an agreement for returning refugees. Today, La Trinidad is one of the most affected communities due to the 3 June 2018 eruption. Their community has been deemed uninhabitable and the 235 families await an uncertain future once again.
