A lone tree stands on the coast in the hills of southwest Haiti, on the road between Les Cayes and Jeremie. In 1923 over 60 percent of Haiti's land was forested. In 2006, less than two percent of the land was forested. Hurricane Matthew, the first category 5 Atlantic hurricane since 2007, hit the island on 4 October 2016. Winds of up to 230km/h (145mph) tore across the worst affected areas, mainly in the south of the island, killing around over 1,000 people and leaving hundreds of thousands in need of assistance.
