Quaad Ali Dubwan Quaad who spent 28 years in the UK before retiring to his village of Beni Salman in the Shameer region, where his pension supports an extended family of over 30 people. The barren and stony soil here makes farming very hard which led both his father and grandfather to seek work as seamen and settle in Britain. For centuries men have been leaving this poor, rural and mountainous area to seek work elsewhere.
