Comrades welcome each other, after returning from the front lines, at the YPJ's (Women's Protection Unit) compound. The YPJ is a Kurdish female militia fighting the Islamic State and Jabhat al-Nusra in the primarily-Kurdish north. Around 35 percent of the Democratic Union of Kurdistan (PYD)-controlled People’s Defense Units (YPG) fighters in Syria are women.
