HIV positive 33 year old Nie Xiangdong holds his youngest son, one year old Nie Saner, who is also HIV positive, at their dilapidated home. The baby contracted the HIV virus from his mother Chen Hongyin, who like Nie Xiangdong and her parents, contracted the disease when she sold blood at unregulated but government sanctioned blood centres during the early 1990s. Six out of eight residents of the Nie household are HIV positive.
