A man carries two young children over La Digue River. Following the collapse, during Hurricane Matthew, of a bridge people were forced to wade across the water course. The downfall of the bridge meant emergency responders where unable to reach the worst hit southwestern peninsula of the island. Hurricane Matthew, the first category 5 Atlantic hurricane since 2007, hit the island on 4 October 2016. Winds of up to 230km/h (145mph) tore across the worst affected areas, mainly in the south of the island, killing around over 1,000 people and leaving hundreds of thousands in need of assistance.
