Demonstrators march through the outskirts of Dhanbhad, the centre of Jharkhand's coal mining industry. They carry a banner of the C.P.I.(M), the Communist Party of India (Maoist), who are still engaged in peaceful protest and electoral politics, as opposed to the Naxalites, militant Maoists who are fighting to overthrow the Indian state. The protest was against a recent rise in food prices and also to highlight the problem of coal fires that are burning across the region, destroying roads, villages and agricultural land. The government is accused, along with coal mining companies, of deliberately letting the coal fires burn out of control in order to force people off land sought by mining companies.
