Oscar, a migrant from Haiti, in the Hotel Migrante in Mexicali. The US-Mexico border saw an influx of Haitian migrants arriving in the autumn of 2016 up until the summer of 2017. Oscar, like many others, left Haiti after the earthquake which devastated the country in 2010, and moved to Brazil were he worked on the preparations for the 2014 Olympic Games. After they finished and the country slipped into economic crisis, many left hoping to reach the US were they had been granted a Humanitarian Visa. However, in the autumn of 2016 the Obama administration revoked their status, and they found themselves stranded on the Mexican side of the border, unable to cross to the US for fear of being deported.
