A faithful young Shia Muslim with his face covered in blood holds a sword with which he has been self-flagellating outside the Imam Hussein shrine during Muharram, in mourning the martyrdom of Hussein bin Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. The sombre festival marks the anniversary of the Battle of Karbala and is a period of intense grief among Shi'ite followers of Islam. During Ashura on the 10th of Muharram, men also hit themselves on the chest in a rhythmic ritual called tatraab.
