Social workers Ipek Turkekole (right) and her friend Vanessa Teyen walking on the outskirts of Bielefeld. Turkekole suffers from sickle cell disease and is treated with a routine of regular exchange blood transfusions during which a portion of her blood is drained, the sickled cells separated from the blood plasma, and then the plasma is reinfused together with healthy red blood cells from a donor. This treatment allows Turkekole to work and lead a fairly normal life.
