Protestors use corrugated sheets to protect themselves from the police as rioting broke out during a huge demonstration by Cariocas (residents of Rio de Janeiro), estimated to be 300,000 strong, in the city centre. Countrywide protests originally broke out in response to an increase in public transport fares and although the government made a U-turn over the fare rise protests continued as people expressed their frustration over a number of issues, including heavy-handed policing, poor public services and the high costs for hosting the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
