Patients at the Edwuma Wo Woho Herbal Centre, which houses about 30 people many with mental health conditions. At least half are shackled with chains. The centre is run by herbal doctor Irene Dadzie (62) who started her practice 34 years ago. The staff at the hospital say they have up to 70 patients visiting for treatment everyday for various ailments from strokes to rashes to severe mental health conditions. Many of those staying at the facility are there to be treated for mental health and or substance abuse issues. Almost all of those patients were shackled. In interviews many expressed how much they were suffering and their desire to have the shackles removed. Patients are given herbal medicines prepared at the centre. Psychiatric medications are also sometimes provided by Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital which are administered by staff at the centre.
