A militiaman belonging to the De Bam gang, which is now part of Mujahid Dokubo-Asari's Niger Delta Peoples' Volunteer Force (NDPVF). The man lost his hand during fighting in Tombia earlier this year. Fighting between rebels and government forces has caused thousands of residents to flee their homes in the town. Violence is common in the oil producing Niger Delta, and the NDPVF claims much of it is state sponsored. The group is fighting for resource control and independence for the region, on behalf of its majority ethnic Ijaw population.
