Crater of the Rano Raraku volcano. This is the source of the hard tuff (volcanic rock) from which the moai were cut. There are around six hundred moai stone statues on Easter island, believed to have been carved by the island's Rapanui Polynesian inhabitants between 1600 and 1730.
