Vitali Kaloyev mourns the death of his children in his home in the town of Vladikavkaz, in North Ossetia. Kaloyev's wife and two young children died when their plane collided with a cargo jet in mid-flight. A lone air traffic controller named Peter Nielson was blamed for the tragedy. Kaloyev's frustration and anger grew as the investigation slowed and Skyguide, Nielson's employers, made attempts to shift the blame. Eventually, in a series of events which Kaloyev cannot remember, the bereaved father ended up stabbing Nielson to death with a pocket knife. He was released in November 2007 after serving four years of an eight year sentence for manslaughter. In Russia, Kaloyev was welcomed home as a national hero, and was appointed deputy construction minister for his home region.
