New President Mwai Kibaki at a press conference two days after the general election. He won a landslide victory, seeing off his Kanu rival Uhuru Kenyatta. The poll marked the end of Daniel arap Moi's 24-year rule and the Kanu party's four decades in power. Kibaki's foot was in plaster due to a car accident during the campaign. After a week in a London hospital, he returned in time to cast his own vote from the back seat of his Mercedes Benz.
