Tourists at the archeological site of Pompeii, the Roman city buried under 4 to 6 metres of ash and pumice by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. By 2008, it was attracting almost 2.6 million visitors per year, making it one of the most popular tourist sites in Italy.
