Participants to play the role of Han Dan await their turn to face the fireworks. Celebrated as part of the traditional Lantern Festival, the Han Dan Festival accompanies the end of the Chinese New Year period. It is characterised by crowds throwing exploding fireworks at a shirtless man playing the role of the diety Han Dan (who many believe to be a God of Wealth who cannot stand the cold, the firecrackers being instrumental in driving the chill out of his body and thus ensuring a smooth flow of wealth for the year ahead). He can only carry a bunch of Banyan leaves to shield his face.
