A woman, one of several hundred thousand displaced people living in central Monrovia, pleads for intervention outside the wall of the fortified US compound, Mamba Point..The ongoing conflict in Libera intensified in March 2003 when rebels opposed to the government of Charles Taylor gained territory across much of the country, advancing on the capital city Monrovia. In August 2003 Taylor agreed to hand over power to an interim government and went into exile, which led to the signing of a peace agreement. Charles Taylor was indicted for war crimes by a UN court, and is accused of fuelling conflict across West Africa.
