Alieu Conteh, in his sixties, sits with baby Latifa. After the death of his wife's sister Fatu, Alieu and his wife, Muso Conteh, took the child into their care. "Children bring joy and life to a house," says Alieu, "So I enjoy looking after them. I plan to raise Latifa as my own child. I hope I live long enough to see Latifa have her own children and I hope that by then life will be better for her." Since this photograph was taken, Latifa has died. Sierra Leone has the highest maternal mortality rate in the world, with one in every eight women dying in childbirth..
