The city of Agdam which lay in ruins after nearly 30 years under the control of Armenian forces. Originally home to nearly 40,000 people the city was captured by Armenia in the first Nagorno Karabakh war. The entire population fled the city and its surrounding districts and has remained unpopulated for nearly three decades. The area was handed back to Azerbaijan as part of the deal that ended the 2020 war between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
