The controversial Hotel Algarrobico at El Algarrobico beach. Building work on the 411-room hotel began without planning permission, and hence illegally, on parkland bordering the protected Cabo de Gata reserve, one of the few undeveloped areas of this coastline. However, following pressure from environmental campaigners, the regional government halted work on the half-built hotel in 2006 and ordered it to be demolished.
