The tragedy occurred after the army opened fire on the crowd of 100,000 refugees who had been crammed into a small area in the middle of the camp. The crowd panicked and tried to run, crushing thousands in the melee. Many more were shot and macheted by the Rwandan Patriotic Army (RPA). The tragedy left over 1000 children orphaned.
