Major Simon Hawkins, of the Australian 16th Air Defence Regiment squats next to 34-year-old Harlina at Banda Aceh's Zainal Abidin General Hospital. Her left leg was severely injured during the 2004 tsunami and amputated below the knee. Hawkins had the task of persuading patients (and their families) with injuries from the Tsunami, that unless they allow the doctors to amputate their gangrenous limbs they will die. Many people had the belief that unless they have whole bodies they cannot enter heaven and Harlina's father was very opposed to the life-saving operation.
