Jabrail, a young Chechen man who is kept prisoner in his own home by his family. He is locked up behind bars for his own protection because he is mentally ill and the war-ravaged city has no facilities to treat him. His mother has stayed with him throughout, afraid that if he left the house alone he could be killed. He can become unpredictably violent and has no awareness of danger, even of shells or bombs. He used to be an artist, but then suddenly, his mother says, he became violent during the outbreak of the second war in 1999. They have only one choice, she says, to keep him hidden until the war ends.
