The city of Agdam lay in ruins after 27 years under the control of Armenian forces. Originally home to nearly 40,000 people the city was captured by Armenia in the first Karabakh war. The entire population fled the city and its surrounding districts and has remained unpopulated for nearly 3 decades. The area was handed back to Azerbaijan as part fo the deal that ended the 2020 war between Azerbaijan and Armenia over Nagorno Karabakh.
