A hijra who has married a man and undergone a sex change operation. In a reversal of the traditional roles, the husband stays home to take care of household chores while the wife goes out to earn a living with a group of hijras. A hijra is a physically male or intersex (hermaphrodite) person who is considered a member of the 'third sex'. Bengali society, despite its conservatism, has traditionally tolerated the hijra?s ascribed dual role of flirtatious comic and spiritual being.
