The bridge at Port Salut which collapsed during Hurricane Matthew, preventing help from reaching the worst hit areas, in southwestern Haiti. Hurricane Matthew, the first category 5 Atlantic hurricane since 2007, hit the island on 4 October 2016. Winds of up to 230km/h (145mph) tore across the worst affected areas, mainly in the south of the island, killing around over 1,000 people and leaving hundreds of thousands in need of assistance.
