People carefully make their way across La Digue River after a crucial bridge collapsed as a result of Hurricane Matthew. The collapse of the bridge meant emergency responders where unable to reach the worst hit southwestern peninsula of the island. Hurricane Matthew, the first category 5 Atlantic hurricane since 2007, hit the island on 4 October 2016. Winds of up to 230km/h (145mph) tore across the worst affected areas, mainly in the south of the island, killing around over 1,000 people and leaving hundreds of thousands in need of assistance.
