Pipes used to siphon and drain water from Lake Palcacocha in the Cordillera Blanca mountain range. Due to the increased volume of water, originating from melting glaciers around the lake, avalanches have the potential to create massive waves, generating mudslides that could be devastating for the nearby city of Huaraz, as happened in 1941, when 2,000 people died.
