©Piet den Blanken/Panos Pictures..Greece, Athens, october 2000..Kurds from Iraq, Afghans and other illegal immigrants camp on a little used shunting-yard if the Greek railways in Athens. They live in carton shacks and other shelters made by waste en refuse. To get food they work illegally in building, cleaning, agriculture or horeca for about 20 dollars a day. ..They all want to go to Europe, namely Germany, the Netherlands or England. For the crossing of the European outer border to Italy, hidden in a truck, they have to pay a smuggler about 1300 dollars. ..To be brought from Istanbul in Turkey to Greece they already had to pay the people-smugglers about 1500 dollars. They crossed the Turkish-Greek border by foot, or in small boats, which is quite dangerous. ......Kurdish people from Irak.
