Victims of a mortar attack are rushed to an emergency clinic run by Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF). At least ten people were killed when two mortars exploded in the walled compound of the Greystone complex, next to the US embassy. Thousands of displaced people had congregated there in the belief that the proximity of the embassy would offer some protection..The ongoing conflict in Liberia intensified in March 2003 when rebels opposed to the government of Charles Taylor gained territory across much of the country. In August 2003 Taylor agreed to hand over power to an interim government and went into exile, which led to the signing of a peace agreement.
