Roy Naquin Jr. holds Jamine Naquin on their porch next to their dog in Pointe Aux Chene, Louisiana. The Naquin family is one of the several families here that identify themselves as Native American. Coastal Louisiana tribes are recognized by the state, but several petitions to be recognized by the federal government have been denied. Many of the families in this region of Louisiana who identify as Native American speak French as a result of their contact with early French settlers, and have lost their native Choctaw language.
