On a viewing platform at the top of the Bayterek tower, inside a gaint glass orb, sits a glided handprint of President Nursultan Nazarbayev, set in 2kg of solid gold, facing east towards his palace. Designed by Nazarbayev, the 97m high tower represents a Kazakh legend in which a mythical bird of happiness, named Samruk, lays a golden egg atop a tall poplar tree. Kazakhs visit the building to place their hand in the handprint and make a wish.
