Human rights defender Angkhana Neelapaijit, (wife of missing Human Rights lawyer Somchai Neelapaijit) is the chairperson of The Working Group on Justice for Peace, an organisation that works on the ground in Pattani helping members of communities affected by ongoing conflict. The insurgency in Southern Thailand began as a conflict between the Malay muslim population and central government, but now the boundaries have become blurred and various guerilla groups have become involved. No-one seems certain as to who is fighting who. As of March 2008, the insurgency had claimed as many as 3,000 lives.
