She holds a plate with his photograph that was presented to his family at a workshop for imams organised by the government. He is now the fourth imam who attended the workshop to have been killed. The insurgency in Southern Thailand began as a conflict between the Malay muslim population and central government, but now the boundaries have become blurred and various guerilla groups have become involved. No-one seems certain as to who is fighting who. As of March 2008, the insurgency had claimed as many as 3,000 lives.
