Beatrice Lipp reads a book sitting in a chair in hospital. She is an 8 year old with ulcerative colitis, a form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) which causes inflammation and ulcers in the colon. She has been in and out of Hospitals for the last 5 years. Now at Boston Children's Hospital, she is part of a social robotic experiment between Boston's Children Hospital and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The goal of the experiment is to determine whether a so called 'Huggable' teddy bear, a social robotic stereotype, can have therapeutic value for children who have to endure long hospital stays. The bear's talking and movements are remotely controlled by Hospital Staff from outside of the room.
