A Osama Bin Laden poster is left discarded inside a military training area meant to look like a village in the Middle East at the Spawar facility in San Diego. Spawar, or Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command, is a research and operations arm of the Navy. Members of the Navy's bomb detection unit train here with a remote control bomb diffusion robot called a Packbot, which is over a decade old. The Unmanned Systems Group at Spawar is developing autonomous vehicles for the military, which they think will revolutionise the way the military fights. The challenge is to develop autonomous vehicles sturdy enough to operate in environments where there are no roads.
