Elephant Pho Khwar gets on a truck to continue his journey with mahout Kalu Say after performing at a Buddhist novitiation ceremony at Sarkalayinn Village. Following the government's ban on raw timber exports, domestic elephant owners started renting out their elephants for festivals and religious ceremonies. Pho Khwar now performs at ceremonies such as Buddhist novitiation, bringing in around 500,000 Kyats per day for his owner. Mahout Kalu Say is paid 5000 Kyats per day, while Pho Khwar, whose market value is around 80 million Kyats, is fed with food worth 50,000 kyats every day.
